What foster family were you with in X,Y, Z year? They took photographs of Caster's staircases and elevators, and interviewed witnesses and some of the Penn paramedics who had responded. And she had gone to a private school growing up. But in this application they had two questions which are to determine financial aid. So one question was: Are you from a low-income family? Morrison's name was therefore ordered removed from the DSS registry. And then the other question was: Are you the first in your family to attend college? Even though I had, again, written statements from two ICU nurses who took care of me saying: Yes, there was blood, [laughs] theres photographs, and there still was the argument of like, there wasnt enough blood or your face wasnt so distorted you could couldnt tell who you were. 207 1,590 6,062 Show this thread Mackenzie Fierceton @MFierceton Aug 8 Will never not make my day to see this on the shelf. [22] It went into greater detail about her past, providing more substantiation for her abuse allegations from teachers, fellow students and their parents, Carrie Brandt (the police detective who had investigated and arrested Morrison) and her allegations that Morrison had enabled Lovelace's sexual abuse. I think youre right. And, honestly, first-generation is never something Ive really identified with fully. [2], Morrison's arrest had been reported in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,[6] where commenters on the online version of the story took her side, speculating that Fierceton was "an entitled brat" who had vengefully fabricated charges that had the potential to end her mother's medical career. RG: And so youre becoming rather inconvenient to the university at that point , RG: I would assume, which plays into the way that universities and elite structures think of diversity, I think. How long were you in the hospital? [2], During her high school years, Fierceton has alleged that her mother subjected her to emotional and physical abuse, the latter enough on more than one occasion to require hospitalization. And how much confidence do you have that that anonymous complainer was Carrie, your biological mother. Why would I do that? And we cant acknowledge that, so we then have to pick apart the other pieces of it, and say that well this, this just cant be real. But now looking back and rereading that article in the last year and seeing that it virtually had no information. Like, they want to curate a diverse experience for their well-off students, so that they can say that they had this diverse experience in college . "They are the people that support you, look out for you, & love you unconditionally. So they heard from her and immediately they call you into a meeting with the deputy provost at the time, Beth Winkelstein . Mackenzie Fierceton is the child of a doctor who attended a private prep school in a wealthy suburb. So I was like: OK, fine. RG: And all of us, no matter what our situation, are not completely safe from it. And after you talked to the school, how did you get to school the next morning? Mackenzie Fierceton, C'20, has been awarded a 2021 Rhodes Scholarship for graduate study at the University of Oxford. The university's police did not know at first where the building was and the city's paramedics did not know how to get to it. And they were the ones I believe and this is public now because Penn attached it to their response to the lawsuit I filed and I believe they were the first ones to mention that I had gone to private school and that they were questioning if I was low-income. Like there is more attention to systemic poverty and trying to keep children in their homes to begin with, I would say, which is important, because if you can keep kids in their homes, then theyre not in the system and facing that foster-to-prison pipeline. "Once you do something that the University sees as undermining its quest for power and prestige, it will not think twice about discarding you, humiliating you, and retaliating against you, which is exactly what they did" said one SP2 student in support of Fierceton. Right. I wrote a poem about the actual what the message was, which is so cheesy and Im cringing at my 17-year-old self [laughs], but it was about the healing power of gratitude. We want to think of it as: If you were ever rich, youre always rich; if youre ever poor, youre always poor. Morrison then brought suit in circuit court to have the board's decision reviewed and reversed. Thank you so much for having me. [9][3], In her sophomore year, Fierceton, already majoring in political science,[3] decided to pursue social work as a career, with the goal of being a voice for children in foster care like the ones she had come to know. And I asked in the email exchange: Is this about the anonymous email? And I dont remember all of the questions, but it was a really intense, rapid fire of really difficult and challenging questions. She shared with the former screenshots of online chats and printouts of emails with representatives of the, The Rhodes Trust report found that the Penn police had no records of any calls to them from Fierceton about this. But its relevant to financial aid and the student should check whatever box is going to give them most access to financial aid, which would be yes to both questions. I do think that it is a huge defense mechanism that people deploy. She had not, she insisted, written her original essay with the intent of increasing her chances of admission. But that was definitely a driving force for why I decided, ultimately, to withdraw because I felt like: OK, federal prison is no joke. And so I was like, of course, Im going to respond again. RG: And it has, has she stuck by that? MF: Yeah. RG: Right. And how much did she challenge your medical condition after that beating? Yeah, it was, things like that where I simplified all of these foster kids that youre living with a biological family who have kids, which I would say are foster siblings. So first-generation and/or low-income, again, is the acronym. Thats all it takes to support the journalism you rely on. And Im kind of one of the lucky ones where I had really expansive and thorough documentation for all the parts of this story. She had bruises all over her body in different stages of healing an obvious sign of child abuse.. And now they have to face the fact that someone who looks like them, who shares all these identities with them, could be the source of all of this harm. This made Fierceton feel as if she were being watched for anything she did that could be used against the state's case by her mother. Fierceton earned her bachelor's degree in political science from the College of Arts & Sciences and is . She was one of only 32 high school students selected from a pool of 2300 applicants. [2], Two weeks after the New Yorker article was published, Fierceton gave an interview to The Intercept's Ryan Grim for an installment of the Deconstructed podcast. Like, those two things dont fit together. MF: Yeah. And that dynamic, I would say, [laughs] probably played a big part in all of this. And you experienced that yourself, right? She bounced from one foster home to the next. I think its a reflection of the systemic prejudices . RG: Right. In a 25-minute conversation, she went into detail with Fierceton about her past and what she planned to do with her scholarship. [2], To White, Morrison repeated her story that her daughter had fabricated the abuse allegations. Like questioning: How much blood? Fierceton says she had not failed any tests; her Whitfield transcript shows she got a B+ in the class. And especially, again, like these stereotypes of black and brown, low-income families, the knee-jerk reaction is like: Oh, well, theyre unequipped to be a parent. Fierceton described herself as a first-generation college applicant who came from a low-income, foster-care background. I think [its] called Penn First, I believe, and it seems like you socially spent a lot of time with them? We dont believe you. Youre engaged in a lawsuit with Penn. A picture of her was posted at the nurse's station should she make the attempt. Smith said he believed the university had decided before it began investigating that Fierceton's abuse allegations were false and that she had fabricated them with the goal of finding an easier way into Penn or another elite school. She was an independent student when she applied. RG: Like questioning: How much blood? We started building this, and this is exactly who we built it for. But I guess I cant say for sure. Is it as well explored territory as a school-to-prison pipeline? In May 2022, after a lengthy article in The New Yorker drew widespread media attention to Fierceton's story, the university dropped the charge and awarded her the degree. Since we began the Reshuffled journey, any mention of foster care grabs my attention, the same with Tracy. Well, Mackenzie, thank you so much for joining me and sharing your story. [2], For her senior year, Whitfield gave Fierceton a full scholarship. The university writes: After those who knew Fierceton raised questions about her story, it was investigated not just once, but several times, and not just by Penn faculty and staff, but also the Rhodes Trust. So Im not sure how much could have been missing. [1]:95, Judge Kristine Allen Kerr ultimately held for Morrison. But it doesnt mean you were always low-income, just that you are now. Like some students do have a story, more like me where they had some kind of separation from their family; other students their parents were doctors or lawyers or Ph.D. students in other countries, but then they came here and their degrees no longer, essentially, counted or people who are just first-generation and not necessarily low-income or people who are low-income, but not first-generation. Attached were copies of the Missouri court orders expunging Morrison's arrest and removing her name from the DSS registry. And I think that she kind of encompassed a lot of the stereotypes that people, and also the Penn administrators have about what FGLI students are when in reality, those of us who are part of the community know that theres so many shapes and sizes of FGLI students. January 7, 2022. The department of social services substantiated Mackenzies allegations, as did the Missouri Child Abuse and Neglect Review Board, which is an independent state panel. And Im like: I dont know what else I could give them that would possibly convince them if their belief is as a 15-year-old, 16-year-old was journaling about my experience of abuse and hiding it in an air vent, and it was actually secretly all a plan to like accuse my mother of abuse and go into foster care so I could have a sad story. But the outline of the story is this: Mackenzie was raised in a wealthy St. Louis suburb by a single mother who was repeatedly abusive, according to two state agencies. What kind of a group is that? And what happened after that? I took photos of the building and sent it to them, and I was connecting them with different people who were in my class, who were in his class. Yes, definitely. She, to my knowledge, has stuck by that. RG: That they would forward charges to the federal government of wire fraud. There, she wandered the hallways until she found the history teacher, and collapsed. And so I did definitely have that kind of like: I have no idea what else is going to convince these people. Detective Carrie Brandt, who had been planning to follow up on the hotline report at Whitfield that day, instead interviewed Fierceton at the hospital. Whereas a social worker comes into a poor home and looks around and sees just the normal poverty that our system has foisted on people and says: Oh, well, clearly this is somebody that needs to be stripped out of here. And it became pretty clear to me that there had been a very similar delay in his care, but even worse dynamics. She feared that her mother had inflicted the injuries, perhaps out of jealousy that Lovelace was attracted to her, even as it seemed to Fierceton that Morrison was "offering [her] up to him on a silver platter". Mackenzie Fierceton, 24, claimed she was from a poor background and grew up in foster care when she actually attended private school By Phoebe Southworth 13 January 2022 8:00pm Mackenzie. And we had a fairly lengthy conversation, just kind of going through the ins and outs of my childhood and left it at, she was like: OK, I understand now and Im just going to leave this. She added the additional detail that at the time of her first hospitalization, Fierceton had just failed her first AP Chemistry test. Like what does Penn say when you tell them: Hey, the Penn official who helped me fill this out said that these are the categories that I fit. And I ended up reaching out to his widow I found her on Facebook and sent her a message just to say: You know, I think I found some information. Joining is simple and doesnt need to cost a lot: You can become a sustaining member for as little as $3 or $5 a month. Consider what the world of media would look like without The Intercept. And did they say anything along those lines? MF: They have since claimed that that is not what they [laughs] insinuated, I believe my former lawyer spoke to it in The New Yorker piece. [Laughs.]. verbally. [4] It took nearly an hour, during which Fierceton seized intermittently and never completely regained consciousness, for her to be taken to the hospital. And there was also the added threat that they would report me to the federal government for wire fraud if I didnt, again, withdraw from the Rhodes and sign this NDA. She has a bachelor's degree in political science from Penn and was working on a master's in social work. She is poor, but she has not been poor for long enough. Thats not in question. And like you said, like, yes, obviously I was looking in a mirror, and I knew I was looking in a mirror. And especially, again, like these stereotypes of black and brown, low-income families, the knee-jerk reaction is like: Oh, well, theyre unequipped to be a parent. At Oxford University, Mackenzie Fierceton will conduct research on the "foster care-to-prison" pipeline. I cant remember if it was in the Rhodes essay or in another essay that, in hindsight, you wouldve tightened up. So Im not sure if it was Penn who reached out to her or vice versa, which I think is also an important question in all of this. Yes, to my lawyer who communicated it to me. I was in this private school with a lot of upper-middle class or wealthy white students. Interesting. or in graduate school. Mackenzie is the soap's first transgender character, added to the series after Stone wrote to executive producer Jason Herbison to pitch the character. To me, it seems like any reader of the English language would read that in a literary sense , RG: of its self-exploration, self-doubt, trauma. And the chain of events that happened leading into foster care? She had bruises all over her body in different stages of healing an obvious sign of child abuse., No, I found it before. Are we going to see these injuries? RG: Did they make that threat in writing or was that . Fierceton joins Ryan Grim to discuss the saga of her battle with UPenn and why the Ivy Leagueinstitution seems to have so much trouble recognizing the complexity of poverty in America. She entered foster care only at the age of 17, after making a complaint of abuse against Dr. Morrison a complaint that a court later found not to be credible. So now Im looking at one American city and one English city and comparing the experiences of youth who crossed over from the child welfare system to the criminal justice system in both of those cities and kind of how the geopolitical environment and local policies and practices might impact the rate of youth crossing over and their experiences. Then its going to be a qualitative study in just really trying to understand their experiences from their voices, which is something that I often find missing from research. He was earlier arrested in Chattanooga, Tennessee. But those definitions arent anywhere to be found. Two weeks into the school year, she realized she had been wrong. And thats actually one of the things that, if there was any doubt whatsoever about this story, in some ways it was settled by that. Its hard to say. Jay Caspian Kang sounded similar themes in two different New York Times newsletters discussing Fierceton's story. The university, in its response to Mackenzies lawsuit, referred to Mackenzies mother as an accomplished physician and claimed that a court had found her allegations not to be credible. Like, they want to curate a diverse experience for their well-off students, so that they can say that they had this diverse experience in college . And Im kind of one of the lucky ones where I had really expansive and thorough documentation for all the parts of this story. Mackenzies critics even began nitpicking how much blood was in her hair while she was in the intensive care unit. RG: who was, I believe now, the acting provost. woman who won a coveted scholarship in the US to study at Oxford after claiming she was poor, overcame childhood abuse and grew up in foster care lost the opportunity after it emerged she was. RG: or in graduate school. He explained that Morrison had had no prior criminal record, Fierceton's complaints about her mother's boyfriend and prescription drug abuse had been unsubstantiated, her cousin had witnessed no abuse while living with the Morrisons at a time prior to the incident, and he had learned that Fierceton "had regular temper tantrums, beyond the normal range for an adolescent". Whereas a social worker comes into a poor home and looks around and sees just the normal poverty that our system has foisted on people and says: Oh, well, clearly this is somebody that needs to be stripped out of here. And still, it was just like: Nope. I think [its] called Penn First, I believe, and it seems like you socially spent a lot of time with them? RG: Right. on about your day, ask yourself: How likely is it that the story you just read would have been produced by a different news outlet if The Intercept hadnt done it? And so the fact that shes continued pursuing you to me kind of demonstrates the entire case. Its virtually almost an unknown phenomena or to people who are working in the field, its certainly known, but theres been very little research on it, which partially complicates my Ph.D., because theres so little to draw upon. Our grad school had no specific definitions or instructions, but I did have a relationship with the associate director of admissions at the time. So those questions really came later. How old were you when you were applying to college? Theres no cell phone reception in the basement. And I decided to do it cause I felt like I had nothing to lose and I ended up making gratitude lists every day for years and it really was a very healing experience for me. I think they have said, well, theres different definitions and the dean who is the dean of the grad school said: Well, thats not our definition. RG: And what was the first-generation community like on campus? This could happen to me. MF: Its hard to say. And so that was when it really transitioned, the second half of it, into these really intimate questions about my abuse until the point where I was sobbing and couldnt answer the questions anymore. And if those things are true, and youre also struggling in poverty, then something is deeply wrong with the system. The reporter had assumed based on her status as a FGLI student which stands for first-generation, low-income that she had been poor her entire life. So the Rhodes Trust ended up after their quote-investigation, and I submitted all the evidence, they ended up still recommending that my scholarship be rescinded, uh, but I had another opportunity to respond to their report, which I absolutely wanted to do. And that is part of what felt like it gave me such a home, is because we had these sort of underlying shared experiences, but all came from different backgrounds to an extent, and all still supported and accepted one another. Because Im not under any illusion that Im the typical foster kid. You didnt grow up in crumbling projects your entire life. To me, it seems like any reader of the English language would read that in a literary sense , of its self-exploration, self-doubt, trauma. [2], Morrison retained William Margulis, a former member of Whitfield's board who had sent four of his children there, including one of her daughter's classmates, as her attorney. Its practically half of Americans, or more. Anything in particular jump out at you after having read back over that transcript? RG: Penn officials, of course, have said the interview was appropriate. But her mother wasnt finished with her. "We have concluded that there is a basis for serious concern and that further investigation by the Rhodes Committee may be appropriate", she wrote. Now-provost Beth Winkelstein told this person: I know youre here as a supporter for MacKenzie, but you cannot speak. But that was definitely a driving force for why I decided, ultimately, to withdraw because I felt like: OK, federal prison is no joke. [2], In the early 2000s the couple went through a protracted divorce during which a guardian ad litem was appointed to represent their daughter's interests at the custody hearing. Fierceton was living off-campus by then, but she and her roommates decided to leave their apartment. And now they have to face the fact that someone who looks like them, who shares all these identities with them, could be the source of all of this harm. So that was, I think later on that specific line came into question. Which as Im sure youve learned since is a complete and fundamental misunderstanding of poverty . [2] Her father, Billy Terrell,[1] had been an actor in soap operas. RG: Talk just a little bit about that case . She kept a journal, writing that she was in so much pain from her bruised ribs that she could barely breathe. Mackenzie Fierceton was deposed after seeking justice for a mature student, Cameron Driver, 38. Theyre not on a website. I do think that it is a huge defense mechanism that people deploy. And to me, Im like I am a household of one, so I am the only person in my family. As in her case, first responders had experienced similar delays in finding and reaching the building, and difficulties removing Driver once they did due to the same accessibility issues. "Was the problem that a child who was placed into foster care and had no contact with her biological mother wasn't actually a first-generation college student? First, Morrison had tried to send Fierceton some jewelry during her freshman year and contacted the university to find out how to get in touch with her; when Fierceton was informed of this she said she had a, "Regardless of the actual reason for her name change," Penn's lawyers write in their response to her lawsuit, "Fierceton effectively fastened a buffer of separation between her real life story and the false story she had cultivated for Penn and others. What kind of a group is that? It was: Shes a spoiled little brat. Penn claims that was meant purely for purposes of the program, to attract as many students as possible who could benefit from participation in it. And what was the first-generation community like on campus? [2] When she turned 18, she formally left foster care[d] but continued living with the family whose home she was in. And then theres the part that felt like: I have no idea whats going to convince these people if I gave them medical records, I gave them forensic photos of me taken in the hospital, I gave them again like corroboration from professors of like how I described myself, from leaders in the FIGLY community. And then I remembered that my teacher had told me to write a gratitude list. They have since claimed that that is not what they [laughs] insinuated, I believe my former lawyer spoke to it in The New Yorker piece. who was, I believe now, the acting provost. Why would I do that? "While it is possible that [she] was the cause of the alleged injuries," she wrote a month afterward, "the court cannot make that finding by a preponderance of the evidence based on the evidence presented." She felt as if it might have been an attempt to intimidate her. I reached out for a response to the University of Pennsylvania and also Provost Beth Winkelstein and General Counsel Wendy White for a response, as well as to Mackenzies biological mother. And they were the ones I believe and this is public now because Penn attached it to their response to the lawsuit I filed and I believe they were the first ones to mention that I had gone to private school and that they were questioning if I was low-income. My life is over, Im in the hospital, Im at rock bottom. "[1]:119, Dismissal of mother's charges and expurgation of records, Role in wrongful death suit against university, In its response to Fierceton's suit, Penn quotes Fierceton as telling police as soon as they entered her hospital room after her later injury about her diary and that it would tell them everything they would need to know. Fierceton finished her Whitfield education on a scholarship while living in foster homes. Like, it seemed like an airtight case from my perspective. I had never heard of FGLI, but these labels resonated with a story I was still trying to process. Fierceton began secretly documenting physical and psychological abuse by her mother, a radiologist, during her high school years. And thats again, like not because there isnt abuse or neglect going on in families that looked like mine, or biological families that looked like mine. And The New Yorker article also alluded to a few things that you had gotten loose with in a couple of paragraphs. RG: Interesting. In the transcript, I wrote it was really just focused on: What happened the night you went into foster care? And my biological family did not fit those stereotypes, and I think that was really hard for people to process. Like you said, theres also the cultural stereotype of like Orphan Annie and Oliver Twist of what these kinds of kids are supposed to look like that starts so early on in, and deep in the culture or media that we encounter that I think really ingrains that into people. There were some pretty basic errors, such as my name, my birth name, and my birth place, and claiming that I didnt have a sibling, that I wasnt low-income, a lot of facts that were pretty easily disputed. Ultimately, she lost her Rhodes Scholarship, and Penn withheld her masters degree, demanding a letter of apology. RG: And did they say anything along those lines? So, I myself, had a seizure in the basement of my grad school in January, 2020, and it took over an hour to get me out of the basement because they couldnt fit a stretcher or a backboard down the stairs or the elevator. And all of us, no matter what our situation, are not completely safe from it. One possible explanation for this depressing story is that Mackenzie Fierceton fraudulently accused her own mother of gravely abusing and attempting to kill her, spent 22 days in the hospital to . Another program official that year recalls Fierceton as seeming more vulnerable than she let on; after picking her up from the hospital following bone surgery that year, she noticed that Fierceton had a very light winter coat and few other possessions. She told Brandt it was her mother, and asked her to keep Morrison from coming to her room. [2], Morrison's lawyer questioned Fierceton closely about apparent differences between her medical records from the hospital and her description of her injuries in a scholarship application essay the lawyer had obtained, and other details from the latter, such as the "metallic" taste of a feeding tube that was plastic and her claim that she was unable to recognize her own facial features in the hospital mirror, when her medical records showed that her injuries were well short of being even temporarily disfiguring. [2], Morrison, no longer employed by St. Luke's, then began the process of trying to restore her reputation by having all references to it removed from the public record. And theres also literature thats economic literature versus sociology, different fields have different perspectives on what that relationship between foster care and the criminal justice system is and what the causes are. The Inquirer story came out in November 2020. So these are all things Ive learned [laughs] I learned after the fact. And I think said something along the lines of there were things missing and it was distorted. [3] "Mackenzie may have centered certain aspects of her background to the exclusion of othersfor reasons we are certain she feels are validin a way that creates a misimpression," the report said. That they would forward charges to the federal government of wire fraud. There were three instances of attempted contact from her family or foster family. So Im not sure if it was Penn who reached out to her or vice versa, which I think is also an important question in all of this. In early 2022, after stories about her struggle with Penn and the Rhodes Trust received national attention from stories in The Chronicle of Higher Education and The New Yorker, commentators took the university, and American elite higher education in general, to task for its use of the story of Fierceton and some other recent Rhodes recipients as poverty porn and its shifting definition of an FGLI student. She lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital, where she spent three days in intensive care. Or is that it separates two into one? She didnt know he was in the basement.
